WHAT IS BRISBANE LIFESAVING SERVICE?

Brisbane Lifesaving Service (BLS) is a ground breaking new initiative that provides Brisbane residents with a unique opportunity to obtain the key lifesaving skills required to patrol one of South East Queensland’s beautiful beaches.

Members will be trained in a variety of core lifesaving skills including surf awareness, first aid and resuscitation while working towards the completion of a nationally-recognised Bronze Medallion qualification.

Theory is taught locally at Surf Rescue House in South Brisbane, practical training in the surf will be conducted on the Gold or Sunshine Coast.

WHY JOIN BRISBANE LIFESAVING SERVICE?

Brisbane Lifesaving Service offers its members a range of personal and professional development opportunities which few other volunteer organisations can match.

As a volunteer surf lifesaver you will become part of an iconic Australian organisation with more than 100 years of history behind it. Have fun, form new friendships and keep fit while giving back to the community and learning vital safety skills that could one day save a life – both on and off the beach.

Unlike other surf clubs, as a BLS member you won’t be expected to patrol every weekend, but rather on a rotational basis at various clubs and at your convenience throughout the summer season.

BLS also offers members unique personal development and community service opportunities beyond the initial surf lifesaving Bronze Medallion.

Participants will also have the opportunity to move into more specialist areas on completion of their training including rescue water craft, communications and the Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter Rescue Service to name a few.

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?

To sign up, or for further information about Brisbane Lifesaving Service, please contact Surf Life Saving Queensland on (07) 3846 8000 or brisbane@lifesaving.com.au

Training courses are run as either a seven day intensive program, or an eight week course which includes one night of theory and one half day of practical training at the beach each week.

The membership fee is $170 and this includes your swimwear, BLS polo shirt, cap and wet shirt, full surf lifesaving patrol uniform and all training materials. Please note that all prospective members must complete a 400 metre pool swim in less than nine minutes before surf training commences.
