What is Bowen Therapy

The Bowen technique is a dynamic system of muscle & connective tissue therapy. It is some times called [homeopathy of the bodywork]. It utilises small but measured inputs to the body stimulating the body to heal itself, often profoundly. The Bowen technique offers tremendous benefit to clients with very little effort on the part of the practitioner.

Bowtech - the original Bowen technique usually results in the relief of many specific injuries & other health problems, both acute & chronic. It does so holistically , by using the bodies innate healing mechanisms. The practitioner delivers signals to the nervous system at specific locations (on muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves), & the body does the rest, responding in its own time, as it is able. While there a few, very specific situations in which a particular 'procedure' is contra-indicated, the Bowen technique is appropriate to use for individuals of all ages & in all degrees of health.
When faced with a acute injury, the practitioner may address only the traumatised parts of the body because there hasn't been enough time for the injured client to begin compensating for & accommodating to the injury. However, aside from the practitioners who specialise in sporting & traumatic injuries, most practitioners work with clients whose conditions have developed gradually over many years, where the patterns of dysfunctional muscle recruitment & posture have become entrenched over a period of time.

A Bowen session involves one or more 'procedures', each each of which consists of several sets of 'moves, between each set of moves, the practitioner pauses for a period of time, as many minutes needed for the client's body to begin responding. After the nervous system begins to adjust the tension level in the muscles, the client is ready for the next set of moves.

Most moves are done either at the origin, or belly of muscles where the receptors are located, informing the nervous system on the state of tension, length or stretch in the musculotendinous tissue. These receptors are stimulated during the 'challenge' & the 'rolling' part of the Bowen move which changes the stimulus received by the nervous system. This can change the pain/muscle spasm loop; relieve any discomfort

A Bowen session lasts between 15 to 50 minutes. The moves are gentle but purposeful & can be done through light clothing if the client prefers. The client usually lies on a massage table, or can be seated in a massage chair, if required, for their comfort. In a session that balances the entire body, the lower back is addressed first, then the upper back, & then the neck. To minimise the need for disturbing the client's rest, all procedures that require the client to lie face down are completed before having turn over for the procedures that are done face up. Some procedures can be done with client either sitting or standing
