More about Bowen Technique: Formula of Balance

What can you use Bowen for?
It can beneficial in a wide range of situations. It can assist recovery from many conditions, from traumatic injury to chronic illness, depending upon each individual’s capacity to heal. Many clients report that Bowen is the most relaxing modality they have ever experienced.

Some of the conditions that often respond favourably to Bowen are:
• Back pain and sciatica
• Neck and shoulder problems
• Hip, knee, ankle and foot problems
• Respiratory problems and hay fever
• Digestive and bowel problems
• Ear ache and jaw problems
• Migraines and other types of headaches
• Menstrual and hormonal irregularities
• RSI, capral tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow
• Bedwetting, unsettled babies
• Conception problems
• Other conditions (ask your practitioner)

What is Bowen session like?
Bowen sessions usually last from 15 to 45 minutes. The moves are gentle but purposeful and can be made through light clothing if the client prefers or on bare skin. Clients usually lie on a massage table, other table of bed, or can be seated in a chair, if required for comfort or under other circumstances.

How does it work?
The practitioner delivers signals to the nervous system at specific locations (on muscles, tendons, ligaments, or nerves), and the body does the rest, responding in its own time, as it is able.
Rather than focusing on a single complaint, the Bowen technique addresses the entire body, by restoring the balance via the autonomous nervous system (ANS).
Healing of the body can occur only after the ANS shifts in a ‘relax and repair’ mode. The Bowen technique seems to catalyse that shift.

There are many theories and research about physiological mechanisms by which Bowen technique brings the results for which it is famous:
• change of a pain/muscle spasm loop,
• fascia mobilisation,
• acupuncture points and meridians stimulation,
• draining of lymphatic system activation,
• detoxification initiation,
• setting up vibrational patterns bringing harmony.

Does Bowen technique suit me?
The Bowen technique is appropriate to use for individuals of all ages and in all degrees of health. Mention if you are pregnant, if you have breast implants.

Why do we need wait periods at a session?
A session involves one or more ‘procedures’, each of which consists of several sets of ‘moves’. Between each set of moves, the practitioner pauses for 2 minutes or as many as needed for the client’s body to begin responding.

What is the difference from other techniques?
In contrast to other hands-on disciplines, where the practitioner imposes correction on the client through the technique performed, the Bowen technique allows the body to heal itself with minimal intervention.
