The name “Bombay” was derived by the English from the Portuguese name “Bom Bahia” meaning “the good bay”. While its present gives it a rich local Indian culture, Bombay’s past is well preserved in the delightful hintsof Portuguese, Persian and British overtones in its culture.

The city was renamed to “Mumbai”, after Mumbadevi, the stone goddess of the deep-sea fishermen who originally inhabited the island city. Today, Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra and the financial hub of India. Its dreaminess is defined by the fact that it is the seat of the glamorous Indian film industry aka Bollywood.
