More about Birchgrove Farm

Anton and I grow organic vegetables, six varieties of garlic and eggs on our 15 acres of beautiful soil, here on the Wyreema end/edge of the Cambooya valley. It's a great lifestyle, if a bit labour intensive, and rewarding. We sell our produce through our weekly market stall at the PCYC market on Sunday mornings, and also, usually hold a stall at the twice monthly Farmers' Market, near the Cobb & Co. Museum, on the corner of Campbell and Lindsay Sts. We really enjoy building friendships with our customers, all of whom seem to share our sensibilities about caring for the Earth and eating clean food, ethically raised/grown. Anton hopes to be farming full-time late this year, when we'll be harvesting our large crop of organic garlic. We have 200 pullets about to commence laying, so that will make 265 hens in all, turning out huge yummy googlies. We rotate their fields through the seasons so they get to enjoy millet, amaranth, sunflowers and lucerne. Each field is shielded by huge tagasaste hedges, which provides shelter from both wind and flying predators. Our girls come to us at 1 day old and are subsequently raised entirely on Kialla organic high protein layer crumble, field crops and compost heaps (providing those micro organisms and bugs they so love). The hens sleep in a nightshed from sunset to sun-up and are then turned out into their fields all day, only usually returning to their shed for dry feed, water, grit and to lay eggs. They have roll-away laying boxes which they're learning to use as we undergo formal licensing procedures. We'll soon be sporting a more professional look, with stamped eggs and boxes etc..We charge $1 per 100gms for our eggs, about $2.50 for bunches of greens and the garlic is graded into sizes, then sold by the $5 bag or more individually. We plan to expand our range of vegies, add berries etc...as time and energy allow.
