More about Beasts In Boxes - Black Angus Grass Fed Beef

Your grass-fed Black Angus beef has been raised in a small herd on Dalrymple Creek flats in the Goomburra Valley. The Dalrymple Creek runs continually, so the cattle have constant access to clean fresh water . The animals are fattened on grassland improved through sustainable grazing practices without use of herbicides or fertilisers. Antibiotics are only used to treat infection and animals grow naturally on a mixture of kikuyu and native grasses to produce quality beef.

Your “Box” has been designed to give you a complete selection of beef products. All cuts and products have been packaged into manageable portions for convenience in storage and cooking.

Cost for your purchase is $13.50 kg. Your “Box” can be delivered direct to your door or collected from Petersens’ Quality Meats – cnr Kent and James Streets, New Farm.

WHY GRASS-FED BEEF IS BETTER

NUTRITION
Grass-fed beef is higher in B-vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol), vitamin K, and trace minerals like magnesium, calcium, and selenium. Studies show grass feeding results in higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid, the “good” naturally occurring trans fat. Studies also typically show lower total levels of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats in grass-fed cows, but that’s just looking at the trimmed cuts: grass-fed beef has plenty of fat, it’s just distributed differently. More subtle marbling and more subcutaneous deposition.
Grass-fed truly shines in the micronutrient profile because Grass-fed cows get more nutritious food because they’re eating a wide variety of (often wild) grasses, sedges, rushes, shrubs, and herbs, each with its own nutrient profile. Of course, how nutritious those graminoids are depends on the quality of the soil,(terroir). If we care about what our food eats, we should also care about what the food that our food eats is eating. Grass-fed is higher because grass grown in good wild soil patrolled by plenty of mobile, self-perpetuating organic fertilizer machines contains more selenium than grain grown on nutrient deficient land.

THE ANIMAL
Cows evolved as grass eaters and only recently farmed intensively in feedlots where they are fed grain exclusively. Apart from the ethics of force feeding animals for human consumption, the impact of a high grain only diet on the health of the animal during its last 100 or so days should concern meat eaters. Our animals are in the paddock the whole of their lives allowing expression of normal cow behaviour and delivered directly to your butcher without the stress of the saleyard and travel.

ENVIRONMENT
Our Angus beef is raised in a small herd 150 kilometres from Brisbane on the fertile soils of the Goomburra Valley. We subscribe to the Soils for Life philosophy of healthy soil being the basis of improved animal welfare, increased biodiversity and resilience in the land and reduced reliance on fossil fuels and costly farm inputs which benefit not only farmer but also the community.
