More about Australian Freestyle Combat

Self-defence is important as society becomes more complex. We daily read and hear accounts of violence and infringements of social morality. It is therefore necessary for everyone to learn to protect themselves and their loved ones.

About

Developed in 1979 by Mick Nicholls, Freestyle Combat Karate is a Modern Traditional Karate System blending Karate, Kali (Filipino martial art) and Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do into a very unique and effective Martial Art. For those interested in what works, rather than what looks pretty. At Freestyle we have no interest in competition and we don’t spar in classes, instead we concentrate on developing our members personal defensive skills.

Freestyle is a family oriented self-defence system designed for both sexes and all ages. Freestyle also caters for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Classes are taught in a friendly relaxed atmosphere and are designed for you and your family to have fun in a very safe training environment, all our classes are taught by qualified, professional, dedicated and caring instructors.

Freestyle Combat Karate is a member of the Australian Kung-Fu (Wu-Shu) Federation and the Martial Arts Industry Association (Both of these organizations are nationally recognised by the Australian Sports Commission) and classes are conducted under the strict guidelines as set down by these associations in regard to class safety and instructor qualifications. All our instructors hold at least a level 1 first aid qualification and nationally recognised coaching accreditation. Freestyle is a family oriented system and our classes are designed for you to have fun in a very safe, friendly training environment.

Freestyle is a fun activity for all the family, giving you and your children the tools they need to reach goals in everyday life.

Our primary goal is to develop self-defence confidence, tolerance, discipline and compassion as well as a strong body. This is done in a friendly, relaxed training atmosphere supervised by instructors who understand the importance of personal attention and positive encouragement.

Striking and kicking skills are developed on kick shields and focus mitts, allowing for development of effective skills and power with no risk of injury. In short, Freestyle is extremely practical, a great all-round exercise for a healthy body, great for coordination, uncomplicated & easy to learn, and suitable for people of all ages and either gender.

Self-defence is important as society becomes more complex. We daily read and hear accounts of violence and infringements of social morality. It is therefore necessary for everyone to learn to protect themselves and their loved ones. At Freestyle Combat Karate this is one of our main objectives; for our members to understand that not only the physical but also the psychological side of personal protection.

Freestyle Combat Karate incorporates the Filipino system of Kali. This unique system has the added benefit of training the right & left hemispheres of the brain to work together for coordination in the drills and an added dexterity of motion, which is quite hard to develop in traditional styles.

In the advanced belt levels students also learn Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do Gung Fu, the combination of not only the physical techniques but also the underlying concepts and principals of Karate, Kali and Gung Fu makes Freestyle not only a unique and effective martial art but also one of the more enjoyable systems to learn and apply.

As stated earlier, Freestyle is first and foremost a system for personal development and protection, it is a truly modern traditional karate system, incorporating concepts and principles blended together to form a superior self-defence system, which is world class and Australian.

We operate clubs in Bundoora, Epping, Mill Park, Mernda, Kilsyth and Heidelberg Heights.

We’re a member of the Martial Arts Industry Association, so you know you’re getting trained, professional instructors with a commitment to safety.
