More about Australian Centre for Blood Diseases

The Centre is at the forefront of understanding the process of blood clotting and blood cancers such as lymphoma, leukemia and myeloma.

The ACBD was initiated in the late 1990s as a centre within the Department of Medicine at Box Hill Hospital. The Centre steadily grew in stature and became synonymous with cutting edge science focusing on blood diseases.

In 2004 the ACBD physically relocated to the new state-of-the-art Burnet Tower at the Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct (AMREP). The combined Alfred and Box Hill Haematology expertise provides the most extensive network of haematology services in the State and is on a par with many of the leading international blood centres. ACBD now is part of the Central Clinical School, also at AMREP.

There are 12 research laboratories at the ACBD. They are:

1. Thrombosis Unit
2. Fibrinolysis and Gene Regulation Laboratory
3. Leukaemia Group
4. ECRU Translational Research Division
5. Red Cell Research Group
