What Is Art Therapy?

Arts Therapy uses creative processes including visual arts, drama, sound, music and movement to improve and enhance physical, mental and emotional well-being. It is a dynamic therapy, requiring a client to participate in their own treatment through the creation of, and reflection upon, the art making process.
Clients are supported in a safe and attentive space, and encouraged in their progress through; recognition of symbol, re- framing of life experiences, exploration of issues and engagement with appropriate art medium to facilitate positive outcomes. No previous experience with art is necessary.
Arts Therapy can be particularly useful in the areas of mental health, family welfare and emotional disorders. Practitioners also work in the fields of; aged care, within schools, in drug rehabilitation, the disability sector, palliative care, and with victims of abuse and trauma.
