ARCADIA MERINOS – ‘Breeding sheep worth their keep’

The word Arcadia has long been associated with bountiful natural splendour and a harmonious approach to pastoralism. This personifies Ash and Katie Penfold’s approach to livestock production, and as such, made it an ideal choice for the name of their registered merino stud.

Arcadia Merino sheep are bred to be robust and resilient animals, run in the paddock under everyday environmental conditions. This is accomplished by selecting animals based on their inherent genetic traits rather than through supplementary feeding. The result is an easy-care merino sheep that is both sustainable and highly profitable.

Ash has a keen eye when it comes to selecting superior sheep to include in their stud breeding program. Emphasis is placed on sound conformation and strong carcass traits without comprising wool quality. These early maturing animals produce a long, soft-handling fibre highly desired by international wool markets. Superior fibre alignment on these plain bodied merinos encourages shedding of water eliminating stain and body strike. Sheep are also selected for their bare breeches removing the need for mulesing.

Fertility is also a key focus for Arcadia Merinos. Ewes that conceive and rear multiple lambs are highly desirable. More lambs to turn off leads to more profit for the commercial producer. Arcadia Merinos consistently achieve excellent lambing results. This year was no exception with 143% lambing from their stud ewes.
