Amphitheatre is a small town in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Pyrenees Highway in the Pyrenees Shire, south-west of Avoca. At the, Amphitheatre and the surrounding area had a population of 248.Gold was discovered in the area in 1853, and a settlement was established at Amphitheatre as a result. It was originally located further south of its current location, in the natural amphitheatre after which it is named. A Post Office opened on 22 June 1859. The Avoca-Ararat railway, which opened in 1890, included a station at Amphitheatre. The station was closed, along with the line, in 1959. The coming of the railway led to the township being relocated nearer to it and to the main road, now called the Pyrenees Highway. A plaque has been placed at the original location as the only reminder of the first town site.Amphitheatre has a primary school and a Post Office, and an ice creamery has been established in the Amphitheatre Hotel. Accommodation is available in the hotel.
