Albury/Wodonga Genetic Counselling Service

Michelle had been working as a Genetic Counsellor in Albury/Wodonga in the public sector for the past 18 years. In January 2017 the public service (based in Melbourne) decided to move all their Genetic Counsellors to Melbourne but Michelle made the decision to remain living and working in her local area. Michelle established a private Genetic Counselling service, called the “Albury/Wodonga Genetic Counselling Service” in July 2017. This was established due to the high demand for genetic counselling in the Albury/Wodonga area. The medical community, local community and Michelle were also concerned about the lack of a local Genetic Counsellor after Michelle had been working as a local Genetic Counsellor for so many years. Michelle did not want local families to be disadvantaged by not having access to a local Genetic Counsellor anymore.

Clients attending the Albury/Wodonga Genetic Counselling Service will be seen promptly for an appointment rather than going on a waiting list to attend a public Genetic Clinic. Many pregnant women with high risk pregnancies will also be able to be seen locally, rather than being forced to travel to Melbourne for genetic appointments with the extra stress and associated financial costs.

Michelle also loves working as a Genetic Counsellor and wanted to continue working in an area she had trained hard for and was very passionate about.

This is the first private genetic counselling service in regional Australia.

Michelle operates from a large GP practice in Wodonga. Although referrals are helpful by providing background medical history they are not essential. This is a confidential service which is available to all individuals, couples and families who would like information and support regarding their genetic concerns.

Michelle is able to provide a professional and personalised service to answer your genetic questions, help you make informed decisions, arrange the most appropriate genetic test for you, listen to your concerns and provide emotional support if required.

Michelle is a Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) board certified Genetic Counsellor as well as a member of the HGSA and Australasian Society of Genetic Counsellors (ASGC). Michelle adheres to the HGSA policies and guidelines that ensure high ethical standards to clinical practice. She also attends regular professional development to provide you with the most up to date and accurate information.
