The fact is no one is killed or injured while performing a reverse park and drivers are missing out on the more important skills needed to remain safe on the road. Everyday 3 people are killed on Australian roads, with 10 times that number being seriously injured. These are average Australian people within our communities and with the correct training many of these accidents could have been easily avoided. Driving is the highest risk activity completed on a day to day basis and is a vital part of our lives; the consequences of being involved in a crash are huge.

Not enough emphasis is placed on driver education when looking at strategies to reduce the road toll. If all drivers were more aware of the effect road trauma has on people’s lives, risk taking behaviour such as speeding, drink driving and mobile phones would all be dramatically reduced. The simple fact is getting somewhere faster or sending that text message is not worth the consequences and the dramatic effect that it can have on your life.

It is also vital that all drivers are competent in crash avoidance techniques, which is something that is currently overlooked by the licensing system. All drivers should know what to do if something goes wrong behind the wheel and how to perform an emergency stop, utilise their vehicle safety systems and remain in control of their vehicle.
