More about A Smart Start Great Southern

‘A Smart Start’ is an exciting, early childhood initiative implemented across the Great Southern Region. ‘A Smart Start’ is focused on providing parents of children from birth to four years old with access to support networks, resources, information and services. The initiative empowers parents and assists them in providing an optimal learning environment for their children.

The main aim of ‘A Smart Start’ is to recognize and encourage parents as their child’s first and most important teacher.

What you receive as a member of 'A Smart Start':

'A Smart Start' provides members with information packs that include developmental milestones, activities to promote the child’s development and details of support services available. These are given to families at regular intervals (birth, six months, twelve months, eighteen months, two years, three years and four years). A story book is given at birth, then each birthday up to and including their fourth birthday. The story book is age appropriate, engaging and tailored to the child’s cultural background.

Information sessions are held once a term in each community, with topics based on community needs. Each community has a Local Working Party (LWP) consisting of parent/ community representatives and they work closely with the 'A Smart Start' coordinator to provide early childhood support to their community.

‘A Smart Start’ in your community is supported by your local Shire, playgroup, library and local school. At a regional level, 'A Smart Start' is generously supported by the Great Southern Development Commission and the Western Australia Community Health Service. All parents of 0 – 4 year olds in the Great Southern are invited to become members of the ‘A Smart Start’ family. See your local Child Health Nurse for a registration form, or contact one of the ‘A Smart Start’ Coordinators based in Katanning.
