More about Yin Yoga Therapy

What is Myotherapy?

Myotherapy is a branch of physical therapy which focuses on the assessment, diagnosis and a hands on approach to the treatment of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. It is the therapeutic process
of relieving pain through the manipulation of muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Myotherapists are specifically trained in the relief of myofascial pain or dysfunction. Location and treatment of “trigger points” (knots), which are irritable points within myofascial tissue. When these points are active they can be painful, restrict range of movement and refer pain elsewhere in the body. Trigger points can arise when a muscle has been overworked or injured.

What is Myofascial Tissue?

Myofascial tissue is a type of thin, strong, web-like structure, made up of collagen and elastic fibrous connective tissue that extends throughout your body to provide support and protection to your muscles, organs and bones.

Some of the modalities used during your treatment may include:
- Remedial Massage, trigger point therapy, and - soft tissue manipulation
- Dry Needling
- Modern Cupping
- Tens therapy
- Thermal therapy
- Joint mobilisation

What do Myotherapists commonly treat, diagnose and prevent?
Some of the disorders a myotherapist commonly address include:

- Pain and dysfunction
- Fibromyalgia (pain in fibrous tissues, usually chronic)
- Back and hip pain (sciatica)
- Neck and shoulder pain (frozen shoulder)
- Leg and arm pain (ITB syndrome or tennis\golfers elbow)
- Headaches and migraines
- Chronic overuse syndromes: wrist, hand & elbows
- Sports injuries: Shin splints and plantar fasciitis
- Poor posture
- Inflexibility
- Arthritic pain
- Stress related tension

Myotherapists recognise that myofascial pain may be experienced locally or it may radiate to areas away from the original source. Other symptoms may also be experienced as a result of trigger points within the muscles such as decreased range of motion, stiffness, fatigue, weakness and tingling or numbness. These may be the result of a number of factors including poor posture, overuse of muscles and stress. The aim of Myotherapy is to treat the cause as well as the symptoms of a wide range of conditions.
