Community Food Enterprises have a long track record of improving food insecurity in low income areas. They also act as ‘the third place’ a space for the community to come together and a place for those who are socially isolated to make a connection to the wider world.
Food_Skil has been operating a pilot shop in Norlane for the last year and from this pilot we gained some key findings;
1. An affordable quality fresh food shop and café is wanted and needed by the community
2. The margin on the fruit and vegetables is too low to operate a financially viable enterprise and we needed to find other avenues of income to make the enterprise viable
3. The residents of Norlane have low income and resources but many have significant food knowledge and skills.
In a survey of local residents, 50% indicated that they would like more places to buy healthy food and 23% of participants stated they would like more places to buy healthy food within walking distance of home.
