More about Stumpy Gully Vineyard

Stumpy Gully Vineyard was established in 1989 in the Moorooduc Wine Touring Area of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. This family-operated vineyard is owned by the Zantvoort family who have planted some unusual varieties along with the classic varieties for which the region is becoming increasingly famous.

The first vines were planted in 1989 partly on historic dairy land unused for half a century and partly on virgin bush soil. These unspoiled Moorooduc soils, the cool climate of the Mornington Peninsula and the unique mesoclimate between two bays, together with the modern viticultural techniques practiced by Frank and Michael Zantvoort and the expertise of Wendy Zantvoort’s winemaking team contribute to the complexity and unique quality of the wines produced from this vineyard.

Further plantings at 1675 Stumpy Gully Road, the “Crooked Post” block, occurred during the 1990s leading to a further 25 hectares all planted to red varieties. This was followed by the establishment of the Shaw Road vineyard, and the Black Night block was established south and adjoining the original vineyard home block.

There are now 11 varieties produced under the Stumpy Gully label. The classic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are produced together with Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Pinot Grigio, Viognier and Marsanne are also grown at Stumpy Gully, and since 1998 the first Peninsula-grown Sangiovese.

A second label “Peninsula Panorama” was introduced in 1998. Currently Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and a Rose are available.
