More about Scott Street Primary School, Whyalla - 50th Anniversary 2017

Old scholars, teachers and staff are invited to attend the Scott Street Primary School 50th Anniversary Reunion Dinner on the 11th March 2017 long weekend at the Westland Hotel in #Whyalla, SA (Palms Function Centre)

Music will feature hits from the 60s through to the 2000s and will be provided by local, high energy, contemporary band, Jackdaw

Scott Street Primary School opened in 1967 when Whyalla experienced a huge population increase and migrant intake. The old school has been demolished and is now a housing estate but the memories live on.

This is a once in a lifetime event to bring together as many faculty, pupils and ancillary staff from what was one of the most progressive new schools in the State, in its infancy.

Memorabilia and photographs are also being sought so that stories and old friendships can be renewed online and in person at the reunion.

Bookings essential! Cost is $10. Dining is available in the Vegas Dining room for those that want to catch up for a meal before heading over to the Palms at 7pm. For further information, please contact annecunningham@bigpond.com, follow www.facebook.com/scottstreetpswhyalla or text 0477 999 347.

"As young impressionable children, many of us were swept through the turnstiles of life, to escape the uncertainty, poverty and post war conditions our parents endured, from all over the world. The 50’s and 60’s saw many of these migrant families flood to Whyalla, where housing was being erected at an unimaginable rate; to cope with the families snapping up employment at BHP and the Shipyards.

To meet the needs of these families, a new shopping centre and schools were essential ingredients. One of the first of these “modern” schools was Scott St Primary School, which opened its doors in 1967 to a flood of new migrants from all corners of the globe, to become the perfect example of the melting pot which is multiculturalism in Australia.

Scott St Primary School would have celebrated its 50th Anniversary in March 2017, however dwindling enrolments, in line with the decreased population in Whyalla, sadly saw Scott St Primary School close its doors in 2007 and is now a new housing estate.

When the idea of a 50th Anniversary arose a few years ago, we were saddened to see that our part in history in Whyalla had been erased. Then an idea emerged based on the fact that many of the people from that era were scattered across Australia, yet with the aid of modern media, many are still in touch all these years later. People were interested, then more people became keen. The more we discussed the idea of a 50 year reunion the more excited people became of the chance to catch up with people we became “ Australians” with all those years ago.

Both former teachers and students have expressed interest and look forward to the reunion at Westland Hotel in March 2017, where a dinner has been arranged. Local Accountancy firm Cunningham and Harvey ( former students) have kindly sponsored the event and many people have expressed interest.

My family has been heavily involved in arranging this reunion and we look forward to even more expression of interest in the weeks to come. This is probably our last opportunity to catch up with those people from our lives from so long ago. The more the merrier. To secure your place for the 50th Anniversary Dinner for Scott St Primary School on Saturday, 11th March, 2017 please contact Anne Cunningham at annecunningham@bigpond.com.

Looking forward to seeing you there!"
