I started this page for the enjoyment and benefit of my past, current and future students as well as a forum for other musician’s thoughts and ideas on being a professional musician and teacher.
After walking away from a so called ‘real job’ about 15 years ago, I gave up and finally let music have me. I am now a well-respected music tutor and professional performing musician - Poorer I may be, but never happier.
I am always learning more of my craft and have learnt some valuable lessons about music (and people) since I started teaching. If you are learning how to play an instrument from me, you will quickly understand and appreciate that you are not just a name on a timetable that ‘takes up’ my time each week.
It’s a given that each lesson is tailored to the individual. This is because everyone is different in how they learn, their background, their age, how often they practice and how they play. I know in being a tutor - one size definitely does not fit all!
It’s a privilege working with younger students and watching their musical skills and talent grow and mature as they do. I find this a great part of the ‘job’ and always a special moment when that first gig comes along!
Teaching young adults who are sitting their HSC is also very satisfying and I greatly enjoy their achievements (just as much as they do!). This is especially gratifying for the students that have to work hard at it! Playing an instrument and performance isn’t all about memorising the notes, and no one ever said musical theory was a piece of cake. This is why I also offer musical theory and musicianship classes for my students.
I also enjoy giving lessons to adults, either beginners or intermediate players. I used to be a young working dad myself and I know how hectic and unexpected the real world can be, especially raising three girls. I am happy to provide casual lessons for the more casual player, even if all you want to do is learn one song for someone special (or yourself).
