More about Leogate Estate Wines

THE CELLAR DOORS : -

The new Leogate Estate Cellar Door is now open for visitors 10am - 5pm daily (closed Christmas day). Come in and try our trophy and medal winning wines!!!

Sited on the picturesque Brokenback Vineyard at the foot of the Brokenwood Range, the Cellar Door is the perfect place to enjoy that unique taste which only Hunter Valley wines can provide: smooth, rich Chardonnays from wide rimmed glasses, crisp and clear Semillions of international renown, peppery earthy shiraz with a touch of leather, and magnificently fruitful Verdelho. All produced from the great vines of one of the best regarded vineyards in Australia.

Relax in the warmth of the fireplace, or in our fountained courtyard overlooking the Brokenback Range.

THE VINEYARD : -

Brokenback Vineyard is situated on Broke Road at the heart of Polkobin in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. The Vineyard was planted in the mid to late 1970's by a Rothbury Estate Syndicate led by the late Len Evans AO, MBE. Over the ensuing years the vines have produced premium wines which have been sold under a variety of labels.

By the time Bill and Vicki Widin purchased Brokenback Vineyard in 2008, the vineyard had been divided into two separately-owned portions. Both portions became available for purchase privately.

The now re-amalgamated Brokenwood Vineyard has 50ha under vine, comprising Chardonnay and Semillion on flat graveled soils and Shriaz on the eastern and western facing slopes of the adjacent rise.

During the autumn and winter of 2008 a great deal of renovation work was carried out on the posts and trellises which benefited the vines and the 2009 vintage.

The February-March, 2009 vintage at Brokenback Vineyard produced 260 tonnes of grape. All three grape varieties were sought after keenly by local winemakers, but core selections totaling 110 tonnes were retained for the initial Leogate Estate vintage.

In the spring of 2009 new blokes of Verdelho and Tempranillo were planted.

The 2010 vintage was successful and 160 tonnes were retained for Leogate Estate.
