The Breakaways Conservation Park is just a short 20 minute drive up the Stuart Highway from Coober Pedy and is the second Aboriginal-owned Park in South Australia.
The Breakaways is co-managed by the Antakirinja Matuntjara Yunkunytjatjara people (AMY), the District Council of Coober Pedy (DCCP), and the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR).
The Breakaways Conservation Park holds great cultural significance for Antakirinja Matuntjara Yunkunytjatjara people.
The Breakaways is geologically important in providing a habitat for arid flora and fauna and a perfect example of breathtaking views and scenery, which appear different throughout the day as the sun moves across the escarpment, highlighting the different colours found in the formations.
The Breakaways has also been home to some well-known Australian movies including; Mad Max 3 – Beyond Thunderdome and The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
