More about Collingrove Hillclimb Motorsport Track

What is Motorsport Hillclimbing about?

The challenge of Hill Climbing is simply about driving the course from a standing start to a flying finish in the shortest possible time. The entry is divided into categories and classes, so that similar cars may compete against each other. And drivers are always competing against themselves by trying to improve on their personal best times. So each driver not only enjoys his or her own race against the clock, but also against other drivers in cars of similar performance. The ultimate achievement at each event is to establish the “Fastest Time of the Day” FTD, usually accomplished by one of the high powered single seater racing cars.
Timing is done to the nearest one-hundredth of a second, a tiny amount, but one which can decide a class win – or indeed the championship!

Collingrove has a rich history and is unique in character. Established in the late 1940's by a group of enthusiastic Sporting Car Club of SA Inc members, as a purpose built Hillclimb course, it was the venue of the first CAMS sanctioned event - the Australian Hillclimb Championship held at Easter 1953. After Bathurst, Collingrove is the oldest continuously operating motorsport venue in Australia.
Collingrove is tight, twisty and technical, requiring great courage, precision, and skill from the driver to gain a competitive time. The outright record of 27.25 seconds is held by multiple Hillclimb Champion, Brett Hayward – in a sophisticated Hillclimb Special powered by a highly developed Suzuki Hayabusa engine. This record was set in October 2014 at the South Australian Hillclimb Championships.
Located just outside of Angaston in SA's beautiful Barossa Valley, the track of bitumen is 3 meters wide and climbs 61 metres over its length of 685 metres (750 yards). The designers included a portion that runs downhill, and there are blind crests and undulations to challenge the competitor.
Collingrove is owned by the Sporting Car Club of SA Inc., one of the nation's oldest and largest car clubs. The Sporting Car Club of SA Inc., established in 1934 and with a membership of 1600 members is a multi-disciplinary Club providing for all interests of the motoring enthusiast. The Club has sections that cover Veteran, Vintage, Classic, Historic Racing, HQ Racing and Competition - it also has a most comprehensive Library, providing technical and general Motoring information to members.
