More about Blackwood River Estate Est. 1961

Blackwood River Estate produces high quality beyond organic grass fed produce on farm in Boyup Brook using natural regenerative farming techniques producing high quality, chemical and spray free, healthy natural foods. We practice chemical Free, Hormone Free, Antibiotic Free, Cruelty Free, Beyond Sustainable, Pasture based farming.

What is regenerative farming? It is the use of gentler farming practices that reduce the impact on the land and animals, leaving the land in a healthy state.

How have we done this?

We have been rebuilding soils and soil biology to create increased fertility and healthy pastures to heal landscapes. This includes practices that have allowed us to stop soil erosion by water and wind and increase our water harvesting without the need for digging more dams.

We use ethical and humane animal husbandry mimicking nature and allowing animals to express their natural character and species distinctiveness.

We have been sequestrating carbon by increasing soil organic matter levels and putting back more than what we take out. The more carbon in the soil the better water holding capacity and by having green feed all year it means that the microbes in the soil are alive all year, building more carbon material.

We have Increased nutrient cycling on the farm, increasing microbial activity by reusing and re-purposing waste and materials.

We have established a perennial grass system without the use of chemical inputs and have created a bio-dynamic farming practice.

Pasture cropping and continual stock rotation means that our animals are always moved onto greener pasture and the pastures have a chance to recover before being grazed again.

Our animals work in the ecosystem together with us focusing on the soil and pasture health and the happiness and health of all of our lives.

Why Beyond Organic and Why aren't we certified?
There has been a move recently for people wanting to know that their meat has come from a healthy farm where they have been raised with respect and nurtured throughout their lives. There has also been a flood on the market of people claiming to be providing this and many have been exposed as frauds (free range eggs for example) and since then there has been a lot of people distrusting the greener label branding.

By being beyond organic we are saying that we have held ourselves to a higher standard then what there currently is for organics as well as being a bio-dynamic farm which looks at the farm in a holistic sense that we look after soil, plant, animal, human and environmental health.

We have been chemical and spray free for 8 years but don't feel the need to certify. We offer an open door policy for anyone wanting to come and see for themselves the practices that we have been using.
