More about City of Perth

The city of Perth has its origins in 1829 when the Swan River Colony was established by the British Government. The city was named after Perth in Scotland. Perth formally attained ‘city’ status in 1856 when it was declared a Bishop’s See by Queen Victoria. The first meeting of the Perth City Council was held on 10 December 1858. It was not until the centenary of Foundation in 1929 that the position of Mayor was elevated to Lord Mayor. The Council met at a number of locations over the years, moving to its current home, Council House, in 1963. In 1994, the sprawling local government area was split into four separate authorities with the creation of the Towns of Vincent, Victoria Park and Cambridge. The City of Perth remained as the capital city of Western Australia.
